Horses – Edwin Muir
The poet one evening happens to see farm horses, individuals powerful shaggy animals operating the plough and something jolts his memory and he recalls his earlier fear of these family pets. As a child, Edwin Muir lived in the Orkney Islands exactly where animals like Shetland ponies were used regularly as farm animals. Since a child, the poet was confused by their highly effective presence specially when seen throughout the gloaming mild of a past due afternoon. If the horses ripped the plough in the serving rain, they will seemed like some type of monsters inhaling fire (their steaming breath of air condensing inside the cold air). Their heaving bodies with light moving off their particular sides had been a powerful photo that scared the child. The main subject of the composition is the plantation horses of the poet's child years.
